Stop Looking for “Magic Prompts”

If you’ve spent time online searching for the perfect AI prompt, you’re probably looking in the wrong place.

The people getting the best results from AI don’t necessarily have secret prompts, they’ve simply learned how to communicate with AI more clearly.

Recently, a developer shared a framework after analyzing more than 1,000 real-world prompts used by their team. They noticed that the prompts producing the best results all followed the same six principles.

They called this framework KERNEL.

Whether you’re creating content, writing code, running a business, or simply trying to save time, these principles can dramatically improve the quality of your AI conversations.

Let’s break them down.

K — Keep It Simple

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to explain everything in one prompt.

The more objectives you include, the more AI has to guess what matters most.

Bad Prompt

Help me improve my business, create a marketing strategy, write social media posts, and tell me what AI tools I should use.

Better Prompt

Create a 30-day Instagram content strategy for my AI agency targeting entrepreneurs.

The second prompt has one clear objective.

Instead of trying to solve ten problems at once, AI can focus all of its attention on one.

The simpler your request, the more accurate the response usually becomes.

E — Easy to Verify

Words like:

  • Make it engaging

  • Make it better

  • Make it more professional

…mean different things to different people.

Instead, define what success actually looks like.

Make this article engaging.

Rewrite this article and include:

• 3 real examples

• 1 analogy

• Short paragraphs

• A summary at the end

Now there’s no guessing.

Both you and the AI know exactly what you’re expecting.

R — Reproducible

Avoid prompts that depend on time.

For example:

Use the latest trends.

Build a modern website.

Those instructions become outdated quickly.

Instead, be specific.

Better Examples

  • Build a landing page using React 19.

  • Write this in Alex Hormozi’s educational style.

  • Create a minimalist Apple-inspired design.

  • Use Tailwind CSS.

The more specific your prompt, the more consistent your results will be.

N — Narrow Scope

Here’s a rule that almost every advanced AI workflow follows:

One Prompt = One Goal.

Instead of asking AI to:

  • Research

  • Plan

  • Write

  • Edit

  • Design

…all in one conversation…

Split the work into steps.

Example:

Prompt 1

Research competitors.

Prompt 2

Summarize the insights.

Prompt 3

Create an outline.

Prompt 4

Write the article.

Prompt 5

Improve the tone.

Breaking work into smaller tasks almost always produces better results.

E — Explicit Constraints

Most people tell AI what they want.

Very few tell AI what they don’t want.

Adding constraints removes ambiguity.

Instead of saying:

Write Python code.

Try this instead:

  • Python only

  • No external libraries

  • Maximum 50 lines

  • Add comments explaining each function

  • Output only the code

These small instructions dramatically reduce unwanted responses.

L — Logical Structure

This is arguably the most valuable principle in the framework.

Instead of writing one giant paragraph…

Organize your prompts into four sections.

Context

Who are you?

What’s happening?

Task

What exactly do you want AI to do?

Constraints

Any rules?

Word count?

Audience?

Things to avoid?

Output

How should AI respond?

Markdown?

JSON?

Checklist?

Table?

This simple structure makes your prompts easier for both you and the AI to understand.

Before vs After

Let’s compare two prompts.

Before

Help me improve my business using AI.

After

Context

I own a social media agency with three employees.

Task

Suggest five AI automations that could save at least five hours every week.

Constraints

  • Budget under $100/month

  • No coding required

  • Easy to implement this week

Output

Create a table ranking each idea by:

  • Impact

  • Difficulty

  • Estimated hours saved

Which prompt would you rather receive?

Exactly.

The second one removes almost all ambiguity.

Business Example

Imagine you run an online coffee brand.

Instead of asking:

Give me some marketing ideas.

Use something like this:

Context

I sell premium coffee online.

Task

Generate five Instagram carousel ideas that educate first-time coffee buyers.

Constraints

  • Maximum seven slides

  • Educational tone

  • No discounts

  • Beginner-friendly

Output

Provide:

  • Hook

  • Slide outline

  • Caption

  • CTA

Now you’re giving AI a clear brief instead of a vague request.

Coding Example

Instead of:

Build me a dashboard.

Try:

Context

I’m building an internal SaaS dashboard.

Task

Create a React component that displays user analytics.

Constraints

  • Tailwind CSS only

  • No external UI libraries

  • Responsive

  • Under 120 lines

Output

Return production-ready code with comments.

The difference is night and day.

My Favorite Prompting Trick

One trick that instantly improves almost any conversation with AI is asking it to improve your prompt before answering.

Copy and paste this into ChatGPT or Claude:

Before answering my request, rewrite my prompt using the KERNEL framework.

Explain what you changed and why.

Then answer the improved version instead.

This encourages the AI to clarify vague instructions before generating an answer, often leading to much better results.

Final Thoughts

The KERNEL framework isn’t about writing longer prompts.

It’s about writing clearer prompts.

Every improvement comes from reducing ambiguity.

When AI knows exactly what you want…

It usually delivers exactly what you need.

The next time you open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another AI assistant, remember one simple rule:

One Prompt. One Goal.

That small mindset shift alone can completely change the quality of your results.
