🧭 What it is
NoSubscription.org is a curated web directory of professional tools that you can own instead of rent: one-time purchase, free, or open source. Its tagline is "Own your tools. Forever."
Who built it: an indie developer who goes by @cypher1984 on X ("from LATAM with love"). Note: the real name isn't published on the site — verify before attributing.
Price: Free to browse. No account required.

📖 Why it exists
You bought a hammer once. You don't pay a monthly fee to keep swinging it. Software used to work the same way: you paid, you owned it, it was yours.
Then the industry moved to subscriptions. A few dollars a month per app sounds harmless, until you stack a dozen of them and realize you're paying hundreds a year, forever, for tools you'd happily have bought once.
NoSubscription.org exists to fight that. Its stated mission is to index, verify, and promote quality software that offers a perpetual license, is free, or is open source. The filter it applies: professional-grade and reliable, fairly priced (or free), and actively maintained.
🛠️ What it can actually do
You do this | What happens |
|---|---|
Open the homepage | You see a browsable grid of tools, no login wall |
Pick a category (AI, Design, Dev, etc.) | Grid filters to only tools in that category |
Choose a platform (Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, Web) | Grid shows only tools that run there |
Set a max price slider | Hides anything above your budget |
Toggle "Open Source Only" | Strips out everything that isn't open source |
Star a tool as a favorite | Saves it to your local favorites list |
Open the Calculator and add your subscriptions | See your real yearly + monthly subscription spend |
Hit Backup / Import | Save or restore your favorites and subscription list as a file |
Submit a tool | Send a tool to the maintainer for review |
⚠️ Favorites and calculator data are stored in your browser only. Clearing site data or switching devices wipes them unless you use Backup.
✅ Before you start
Any modern web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
That's it. No account, no email, no download to browse.
(Optional) A few minutes to gather the subscriptions you currently pay for, if you want to use the Calculator
🌐 Getting in (no install needed)
This is a website, not an app — there's nothing to install on Mac, Windows, or Linux. Access is the same everywhere:
Open your browser.
Start browsing. No sign-up step.
Optional — add it to your home screen / desktop:
iOS (Safari): Share button → "Add to Home Screen"
Android (Chrome): ⋮ menu → "Add to Home screen"
Desktop (Chrome/Edge): address bar install icon → "Install"
The site is built to behave like an installable web app, so this gives you a one-tap launcher.
⚙️ Setup step by step
Go to https://nosubscription.org.
Find the Filters panel (categories, platforms, pricing, license).
Under Categories, pick the type of tool you need (e.g. Design).
Under Platforms, select your OS so you only see tools that run on it.
Under Pricing, drag the Max Price slider to your budget, or pick Free / Donation.
If you only want open source, toggle Open Source Only.
Browse the filtered grid. Click any tool to see its details.
Click the star / favorite icon on tools you want to keep.
To save your list, open the favorites panel and hit Backup (downloads a file).
To compare against what you're paying now, go to the Calculator.

🔁 Daily workflow
You won't open this daily — it's a "when a renewal hits" tool. Realistically:
A subscription renewal email lands. You feel the annoyance.
You open the Calculator, add that subscription plus any others you forgot about, and see the yearly damage in one number.
You go to the directory, filter to that tool's category + your platform, and toggle Open Source Only or set a price cap.
You shortlist 2–3 replacements, favorite them, and Backup the list.
You migrate one tool at a time, cancel the subscription, and recheck the Calculator total drop.
💡 Tips
Start with the Calculator, not the directory. Seeing the yearly total first gives you the motivation to actually switch. The monthly number always feels small; the yearly number doesn't.
Always Backup after favoriting. Data lives in your browser only — a cleared cache or a new laptop wipes it. The Backup file is your insurance.
Open Source ≠ free of effort. Open source tools you "own" can mean more setup. If you want zero friction, look at one-time-purchase Paid tools instead.
Filter by platform first. It's the fastest way to cut a big grid down to what you can actually run.
Check that a tool is actively maintained before committing. The site aims for maintained tools, but "owned forever" only matters if it still works on next year's OS.
🧯 Troubleshooting
Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
Tool grid is blank / won't load | The directory is JavaScript-rendered. Disable aggressive content blockers for the site, or try a different browser. |
My favorites disappeared | They're stored locally in your browser. If you cleared site data or switched devices, restore from your Backup file via Import. |
Calculator total reset to $0 | Same cause — local storage was cleared. Use Backup/Import to persist it. |
Can't find a category I expected | Use the All Categories view and the platform filter instead; the tool may be tagged differently. |
A tool I want isn't listed | Use Submit a tool to send it to the maintainer. |
⚠️ Because everything is stored in-browser, treat Backup as a habit, not an afterthought. There's no cloud account recovering this for you.
